Thian Leng Temple, historically known as Thian Ling Chong Toh Tong Temple 天灵总道堂, is entering a new chapter through its collaboration with Nirvana Memorial Garden.
As part of the redevelopment, the temple site is being transformed to provide modern memorial facilities while preserving its long-standing religious and cultural heritage. The new development includes a freehold columbarium, ancestral tablet facilities and supporting memorial services for families seeking a respectful and long-term place of remembrance.
Located at East of Singapore at 472 Changi Road, near Kembangan MRT, Thian Leng Temple combines a convenient location with a unique temple heritage and freehold status.

The History of Thian Leng Temple
Thian Leng Temple traces its spiritual roots to Jiangxi, China, where the tradition associated with 廖祖师 developed during the Qing dynasty. His teachings later formed the foundation of 真空教 (Zhenkongjiao), which emphasised simplicity of thought, spiritual cultivation, compassion and living in accordance with natural principles. The tradition later spread to the Nanyang region, including Singapore.
Thian Ling Chong Toh Tong Temple was established in Singapore in 1953 and has long been associated with the Kembangan and Changi Road area. The temple’s premises are located at 472 Changi Road on freehold land.
Over the decades, the temple became a place of worship, prayer and community support for devotees.
A Tradition of Compassion and Community Care
An important part of the temple’s history is its role in helping people facing opium addiction. The temple welcomed those seeking help and introduced daily routines involving prayers, recitation and traditional practices intended to support their recovery.
This reflected the broader values of compassion, moral cultivation and community support that were central to the temple’s religious tradition.
The original Thian Leng Temple featured a traditional single-hall layout with a courtyard in front of the prayer hall.
Its main hall contained historical plaques, portraits and religious artefacts reflecting the temple’s spiritual heritage. The altar was distinctive because it did not feature a conventional statue of the main deity. Instead, symbolic elements associated with “空” and “中” reflected the philosophical foundations of the Zhenkongjiao tradition.
The temple also preserved plaques and a marble tablet recording contributors to the temple’s construction in 1953.
Continuing the Legacy
Although temple activities became quieter over the years as membership declined, Thian Leng Temple continued to remain a place of prayer and spiritual reflection. The report notes that the temple remained registered in Singapore and continued operating from its freehold premises.
Today, the collaboration with Nirvana Memorial Garden gives Thian Leng Temple an opportunity to continue its legacy in a new form, preserving its heritage while serving the memorial needs of present and future generations.

Building Overview of Thian Leng Temple
Thian Leng Temple is a four-storey temple and memorial building, thoughtfully designed to support worship, ancestral remembrance, administrative services and columbarium niche placement.
1st Floor
A dedicated prayer area is reserved for the temple’s original devotees, allowing longstanding religious practices and traditions to continue following the redevelopment.
2nd Floor
The second floor features a majestic three-storey-high Buddha statue, surrounded by beautifully designed ancestral tablet spaces. A separate prayer area is also available nearby for families to conduct prayers and pay respects to their loved ones.
3rd Floor
The third floor houses the Nirvana Memorial Garden service and administrative office, providing support for documentation, order processing and customer service matters.
4th Floor
The fourth floor consists of multiple columbarium suites. Suite S2 is currently available for columbarium niche placement, offering families a modern and peaceful environment for the memorialisation of their loved ones.
